SCN 3rd Anniversary Competition

Posted on September 20, 2012

To celebrate the third anniversary, we decided to do something different. So – here’s details of our first competition. We’ve approached some of our friends in the industry, and they’ve generously offered some of their products or services as prizes.  Massive thanks go to the some fabulous friends of the SCN.

About our Prizes:  We have a 1-year Business Account from SmugMug, ideal for photographers who want to sell their work and set up client galleries.  SmugMug have also donated two Power accounts, which are idea for model and MUA portfolio websites.  Loxley Colour have agreed to print the winner’s choice from their submitted panel or portfolio on one of their 20×16″ wall products.  Treasurehouse of Makeup has supplied us with a bundle of body paint goodies.  And Calumet Photographic have offered a gift voucher made out to the winner to be redeemed at either their Glasgow or Edinburgh branches. Athentech have contributed prizes of their Photoshop/Lightroom plugins too.

Categories for Entries:

Each category is slightly different, so please take some time to read through this guide, and submit your work accordingly. But first a few house rules:

  • You must be a member of the Scottish Creative Network group on Facebook, before midnight on the 19th September 2012.
  • You must be resident in Scotland (this is a Scottish group after all)
  • Images submitted should have been created within the last 3 years (since it’s our third anniversary).
  • You can enter multiple categories if you are eligible, but please use different images in each category.  Submitting the same images several times will lead to disqualification.
  • Prizes are not transferable – if you don’t want the prize, don’t enter the competition.
  • The judge’s decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.  (Damn, I always wanted to write that!)

These rules apply to ALL categories, regardless of photographer, makeup artist or model.

Now here we go on a run down:

Photographers:

Photographers only: images may not be entered into multiple classes.  Do not use watermarks or logos on your images.

CATEGORY A:  Prize – SmugMug Business Account

  • Entries should be a panel of three or four images.
  • Judged on the panel, not individual images.
  • Any genre.

A panel of images should be a cohesive set for a single theme – this isn’t simply your 4 best images. The images need to work well when displayed together. Examples of unsuitable panels would be 3 colour shots and one black & white or three headshots and a 3/4 shot. Good examples would be four black and white portraits or four autumnal landscapes. Four stunning images that don’t work together will lose to four good images that do.

CATEGORY B: Prize – Loxley 20×16″

  • Judged on a single winning image
  • Any genre.
  • May enter two images.

CATEGORY C:  Prize – Calumet Voucher

  • Judged on a single winning image
  • Any genre.
  • May enter up to two images.

CATEGORY H:  Prize – Athentech PerfectlyClear plug-ins
A copy of the plugin suite (Lightroom and Photoshop) as a first prize, two copies of a single platform plugin (Lightroom or Photoshop – your choice) for runners-up.

  • Judged on a single winning image
  • Any genre.
  • May enter up to two images.

Models:

CATEGORY D:  Prize SmugMug Power Account

  • Entries should be a portfolio.
  • Judged on the portfolio, not individual images.

CATEGORY E:  Prize – Loxley 20×16″

  • Judged on a single winning image
  • Any genre.
  • May enter two images.

The portfolio entry is expected to be 10-20 images. This won’t just be judged as individual images, but as a complete set (the order of presentation is important too).

MUAs:

CATEGORY F:  Prize – Selection of Body Paints and accessories from Treasurehouse of Makeup

  • Entries should be a portfolio.
  • Judged on the portfolio, not individual images.

CATEGORY G:  Prize SmugMug Power Account

  • Entries should be a portfolio.
  • Judged on the portfolio, not individual images.

The portfolio entries are expected to be 10-20 images. These won’t just be judged as individual images, but as a complete set (the order of presentation is important too). The same portfolio may be entered for both Categories F and G.

HOW TO ENTER:

  • Naming your images is crucial.  All images should be named firstly with your full name, then an underscore, and the number your image is presented in.  Think carefully if presenting a panel or portfolio, and number them in the order you would want them presented.   Example:  JohnSmith_1.jpg, JohnSmith_2.jpg, JohnSmith_3.jpg
  • Images should be 1600 pixels high (width should be scaled to match the proportions of the original image). Smaller images may be considered – if in doubt, ask!
  • Images must be sent to the following email address: competition@scottishcreativenetwork.org and the subject line
MUST contain the category you are submitting for.  E.g. Category B.

CLOSING DATE FOR ALL ENTRIES IS MIDNIGHT NOVEMBER 11th 2012

By entering the competition you grant the SCN and the prize sponsors a limited license to reproduce the images in the form of publicity and press materials related to the competition. Non-copyright owners (models & MUAs) may wish to confirm the agreement of the copyright holder before entering.
